ECONOMICS OF SOFTENING VS. ANTISCALANT
FOR PRETREATMENT OF REVERSE OSMOSIS

The following are calculations on water softener salt use compared to antiscalant use.

Softener regeneration salt dose for RO feed = 8 to 10 lbs./ cu. ft. resin.
This yields approximately 75% efficiency of 30,000 grains/ cu. ft. capacity.
This is equivalent to 22,500 grains/ cu. ft. or 2,812 grains / lb. salt consumed.


The Flier’s well water is 19.2 grains/ gal. total hardness.

Water Softener Salt
19.2 gpg x 64 GPM = 1228.8 grains/ min. exchange load.
1229 x 1440 = 1,769,472 grains/ 24 hours.
1,769,472 ÷ 2,812 grains/ lb. salt = 629 lbs. salt/ 24 hours.
      @ 11 cents/ lb. salt = $ 69.22 / 24 hour day


Antiscalant
dose @ 5 ppm:
67 GPM x 8.34 = 559 lbs. H2O/ min.
559 ÷ 1,000,000 x 5 ppm = 0.0028 lbs. antiscalant/ min.
0.0028 x 1440 = 4.03 lbs. antiscalant/ 24 hours.
     @ $2.00/ lb. = $8.06/ 24 hour day
     @ $1.66/ lb. = $6.70/ 24 hour day
